Alabama State hits the road to the state of Texas for pair of key SWAC games

HOUSTON, Texas | Alabama State hits the road for a pair of key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) games early in the 2021-22 season just one game back of the lead in the conference race.

Alabama State (4-13, 3-2 SWAC) faces Prairie View A&M (2-12, 2-4 SWAC) on Saturday evening with tip set for 5:30 pm, before facing Texas Southern on Monday night.

The Hornets have traveled to the state of Texas twice the season facing a pair of ranked teams in Texas and Texas Tech and enter the weekend after winning two of their three games at home over the last week. Gerald Liddell (Cibolo, Texas) leads a pair of players in double figures for the Hornets at 11.3 points per game, while Trace Young (Owensboro, Ky.) adds 10.2 per game.

GAME NOTES
  • Alabama State enters the weekend just one game back of the SWAC lead behind Southern and Alcorn State. They have dropped a pair of conference games by a combined 12 points, including falling by just two at UAPB (at the buzzer with a chance to tie).
  • The Hornets are looking to end a three-game losing streak to Prairie View A&M when they hit the floor on Saturday, with the last win coming in Montgomery on February 1, 2020 (52-49). They are also looking to end a five-game losing streak in Prairie View with their last win coming back on February 27, 2016.
  • Alabama State has several ties to the state of Texas including Liddell, Isaiah Range (Cedar Hill / Tarleton State), and Ashton McClelland (Houston / Texas Southern) as transfers, The Hornets also have Juan Reyna (San Antonio / Duncanville HS) and E.J. Clark (Dallas / McKinney) who played their high school basketball in the state.
  • Alabama State leads the conference in four categories this season and finds itself 29th in the nation in free throw attempts and 53rd in free throws made thus far this season.
  • Alabama State has played a pair of teams that were ranked at the time (Texas and Texas Tech) and played Iowa State who climbed to as high as eighth in the polls. They also played Iowa (receiving votes), before games against No. 4/3 UCLA and Memphis (receiving votes) were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols inside their opponents' programs.
  • The Hornets have the fourth toughest schedule in the country according to ESPN trailing only conference foes Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, and Texas Southern.
  • Alabama State has started 11 different lineups this season, making them one of eight teams that have started seven different lineups or more this season.
