MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1971-72 men's basketball team on January 15 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
"Fifty years ago, I don't think any of us ballplayers gave any thought to 50 years later," Rob Thomas said. "However, now that this time has arrived, I think I can speak on behalf of all of us who are still living, that this is a true blessing to be able-bodied and able-minded enough to participate in this recognition ceremony.
"On behalf of the 1971-72 ASU men's basketball program, a very sincere thank you to ASU's athletic department led by Director of Athletics,
Dr. Jason Cable, and to
Travis Jarome, the Director of Strategic Communications, for recognition of this historical event."
Alabama State won 22 games that year, one of 13 teams in school history with 20-plus wins, and finished the year as the SIAC regular season and tournament champions. After winning two of their first three games of the season, they reeled off 15 consecutive victories and scored 100-plus points eight different times.
The team will be honored at halftime of the Alabama A&M game on January 15, with tip set for 4:30 pm on that Saturday.
