Hornets Volleyball Suffers First Conference Loss at the Hands of FAMU

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Despite 16 kills from A'Nylah Cobb, the Alabama State women's volleyball team fell short to FAMU 3-2 in their first conference loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET ONE
  • Alabama State held an early 2-0 lead over FAMU in set one after a kill from Kalysia Bates and an Emily Brooks service ace. 
  • FAMU got their first lead of the day on a 3-0 scoring run to take a 10-9 advantage.
  • The Lady Hornets closed out the first frame on a 5-1 run to win 25-18 and take a 1-0 set lead.
  • Jada Rhodes led the Lady Hornets with three kills in the first set.
SET TWO
  • Both squads traded points until FAMU was able to put together a 3-0 run to extend their advantage to 12-9 
  • ASU regained momentum with an 8-1 streak to take a commanding 17-12 lead.
  • FAMU battled back to get within two but the ASU claimed the second set with a 24-22 victory to jumped ahead 2-0 in the set score.
  • Taniya Jones tallied 2 kills in set two followed by three more from Jada Rhodes. 
SET THREE
  • The Rattlers found new life in set three as they jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third frame.
  • ASU responded with a 6-0 scoring streak to regain the lead at 10-8. 
  • Both teams battled until they found themselves knotted at 23 apiece late in set three.
  • FAMU claimed set three with a 25-23 win to get their first set win of the day.
SET FOUR
  • Both clubs were evenly matched in set four as they traded scores until they were tied at 14 all.
  • FAMU extended their advantage to three after three errors from ASU (17-14).
  • The Rattlers held the lead for the remainder of the set and tied the set score at 2-2 following a 25-20 fourth set victory.
SET FIVE
  • The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 5-3 lead early in the deciding set. 
  • FAMU took the lead with a 3-0 run to extend their lead to one. 
  • ASU tacked on three more scores to knot the score at 8-8.
  • FAMU put together a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 advantage late in set five.
  • ASU battled back but the effort wasn't enough as FAMU took the final set 15-11 over the Hornets
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Alabama State tallied 62 kills as a team with a .224 hit percentage while Florida A&M recorded 60 kills on 149 total attacks. 
  • A'Nylah Cobb led the way for the Hornets, registering 16 kills and 11 digs on the night.
  • Despite the loss, Temperance Chatman scooped 17 digs at libero for the Lady Hornets. 
  • Emily Brooks tallied 32 assists followed by another 22 from Brooke Adams. 
  • Mahogany Vinson rejected a game-high 3 solo blocks.

The Lady Hornets return to action next Sunday (Oct. 9) as they host Texas Southern in the SWAC Pod hosted by Alabama State.
