Hornets Volleyball Advances to SWAC Semifinal with a Sweep Over Alabama A&M

HOUSTON, Texas | In the opening match of the SWAC women's volleyball quarterfinal, the Alabama State women's volleyball team swept the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M to advance to the semifinal tomorrow at 2 p.m. Jada Rhodes tallied a game-high 15 kills while Mahogany Vinson rejected a game-high 4 solo blocks to push Alabama State to the first round win.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Alabama State took advantage of an early 5-0 run and didn't look back as they claimed an 11-point first-set victory 25-14 to take a 1-0 match lead. 
  • AAMU took an early 3-1 lead but Alabama State responded with a 3-0 run to jump ahead by one (4-3) in set two. 
  • Both teams battled back and forth in set two but Kalysia Bates and Mahogany Vinson registered back-to-back kills to win set two 25-23. 
  • Despite an early 4-4 tie in set three, the Hornets secured the sweep as they rolled over the Bulldogs 25-11 to advance to the semifinal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Alabama State tallied 42 kills as a team on 97 total attacks for a .268 hitting percentage in the win.
  • Jada Rhodes led the way for all players with a game-high 15 kills and 10 digs to add to her stat line. 
  • Mahogany Vinson put on a dominant performance on the defensive and offensive end after registering eight kills and a game-high four block solos with three block assists.  
  • Madison Beasley posted her eighth-straight match with 20+ kills as she registered 22 against Alabama A&M this afternoon.
  • Temperance Chatman logged a game-high 19 digs at libero for the Lady Hornets. 
  • Kalysia Bates (8), Taniya Jones (5), A'Nylah Cobb (3), and Amaya Finley (3) all recorded kills for Alabama State in the win.

Alabama State women's volleyball returns to the court tomorrow (Nov. 19) to take on the winner of Jackson State vs Texas Southern at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the SWAC Digital Network.
