Hornets Volleyball Sweeps Jackson State to Advance to the Championship Game

HOUSTON, Texas | Kalysia Bates logged a team-high nine kills and eight total blocks to help Alabama State pull off the sweep over Jackson State for the third time this season. With the win, the Lady Hornets advance to the championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m. to face the winner of Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Kalysia Bates recorded three of her nine kills in set one to help Alabama State secure the 25-18 win and put the Lady Hornets ahead 1-0 in the match score.
  • Mahogany Vinson picked up three blocks and two kills in the second frame to help power Alabama State to a 25-16 win in set two.
  • Jackson State took a 7-6 lead early in the third set but Alabama State powered back with a 3-0 lead to take a 9-7 advantage.
  • Both squads battled back and forth, keeping the margin within one for most of set three before Alabama State finished on a 4-1 run to win set three (25-21) and advance to the championship game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Despite winning the match, Jackson State won the kill battle 38-34. However, Alabama State had the better hit percentage as they logged a .321 compared to JSU's .120.
  • Kalysia Bates led Alabama State in kills with a team-high in both kills (9) and total blocks (8). Bates registered three solo blocks, five assisted, and a hitting percentage of .643.
  • Mahogany Vinson also gave ASU a boost, recording seven kills and four total blocks. Vinson finished with an attack percentage of .545.
  • Madison Beasley (17) and Emily Brooks (12) combined for 29 assists to power Alabama State to the win
  • Temperance Chatman tallied eight digs and three assists in the win
  • Alabama State has now won 14 straight and 18 of their last 19 matches.
