Hornets Sting Bethune-Cookman 37-22

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. |   Dematrius Davis passed for one score and rushed for two more to lead Alabama State University (6-3, 4-2 SWAC) to a 37-22 win over Bethune-Cookman University (2-7, 2-4 SWAC) at Daytona Stadium on Sat., Nov. 5, 2022. 

In addition to Davis, the Hornets' special team accounted for 16 of the 37 points while the defense held BCU to 120 total yards in the second half.
 
Jayden John connected on a career-high three field goals and Santo Dunn returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to aid the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Demetrius Davis capped an 11-play, 59-yard drive with a 12-yard run to give the Hornets a quick 7-0 lead with less than three minutes gone in the opening quarter.
  • Que'Shaun Byrd raced in from 10-yards out to tie the game at 7-7 with 3:16 to go in the first quarter.
  • Dematrius Davis' kicked a bad snap over his out of the end zone which resulted in a safety for the Wildcats and a 9-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • A 13-yard run by Jalen Jones pushed the Wildcats lead 16-7 with 11:02 to play in the second quarter.
  • Alabama State's special teams provided the next 13 points.
  • John Jayden kicked a 19-yard field goal to make them score 16-10 at halftime and added a 38-yard field draw the Hornets to within three at 16-13 to start the third quarter.
  • Santo Dunn returned a BCU punt 70 yards to put the Hornets in front for the first time at 20-16 with 8:16 to go in the third stanza.
  • Kemari Averett found Jaelen Jones for a six-yard scoring strike to put the Wildcats back in front. The PAT missed wide-left keeping the score 22—20 with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Dematrius Davis tossed a 32-yard pass to Jeremiah Hixon to close the third quarter scored and danced into the end zone for a 26-yard score for a 34-27 lead with 14:45 left in the fourth.
  • John added his third field goal of the from 24-yards away to push the lead to 37-22 with 6:52 to go in the contest.
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES
  • Dematrius Davis completed 12-of-15 passes for 171 yards with one touchdown and a season-best 80 percent completion percentage. Davis also did not throw an interceptions while rushing eight times for 42 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Hixon finished with five catches for 68 yards and a 32-yard touchdown.
  • The Hornets' offense set season-highs for points scored (34), total yards (367)
  • Dunn rushed six-times for 63 yards.
DEFENSIVE NOTABLES
  • After yielding 244 yards in the first half, the Hornets held BCU  120 yards in the second half --44 yards in third quarter and to 76 yards in the fourth quarter.
  • Alabama State recorded seven tackles and a Jakobi Robinson interception.
  • Demaruez Bellamy had a team-high six tackles.
  • Colton Adams had five stops and a tackle for loss and Irshaad Davis finished with five tackles.
  • Nelson Jordan and Maurice Lapierre registered one sack apiece.
  • The Hornets held BCU to 3.5 points below their season average of 25.5 points per game.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES
  • The special teams proved big with three field goals, recovered an onside kick and a punt return for a score.  
  • ASU scored 13 straight points, 10 in the third quarter on special teams.
  • Jayden John kicked a career-high three field goals from 19, 38, and 24 yards out and was true on 3-for-3 on extra points.
  • Dunn had 137 combined kick return yards that included one kick return for 42 yards and two kickoff returns for 95.
OTHER NOTABLES
  • ASU Captains #5 Naytron Culepper and #73 Trevon Taylor.
  • The Hornets won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.
  • Jakobi Robinson, the son of ASU Head Football Coach Eddie Robinson, recorded his first career interception.
  • The Hornets three-game winning streak is their first since 2017.
