MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State head coach Eddie Robinson, Jr. added a pair of coaches to his staff in defensive coordinator Antone' Sewell and defensive backs coach James Williams.

Sewell comes to Alabama State from perennial Division II power Bowie State where he served in the same role, helping the Bulldogs to three consecutive CIAA championships and four straight NCAA home playoff berths. He was also instrumental in helping Bowie State to five total NCAA playoff berths and five CIAA Northern Division championships.

He helped coach the team to four NCAA statistical champions and four CIAA defensive Rookie of the Year winners, while coached the 2019 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and the 2019 HBCU Gameday Defensive Player of the Year. He also helped coach the 2021 AFCA Division II Defensive Player of the Year, while helping Bowie State to host its first ever playoff game and playoff win.

Williams joins the staff after a professional career that spanned the NFL and NFL Europe. No stranger to the SWAC, Williams played at Texas Southern and recorded 13 interceptions and 138 total tackles while playing on both sides of the football for the Tigers. He also played for Indianapolis, Houston, and the New York Giants in the NFL before helping the Scottish Claymores to the NFL Europe World Championship in 2016.

He also served roles as the President of Huddle Up, the NFL Former Players Association Houston Chapter (2016-18) and the Treasurer of the NFL Former Players Association Houston Chapter (2014-16). He also founded Fight 4 Me, Inc. Foundation in Houston for underserved youth (ages 12-17).
