MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State got back on track in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a 6-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
Alabama State (3-5, 2-1 SWAC) plays host to the SWAC Pod II this week in Montgomery beginning tomorrow. The weather calls for scattered thunderstorms (50 percent) with highs around 72, before tapering off to partly cloudy skies on Saturday with temperatures hovering around 45 with a low of 24. The final day of the tournament – Sunday – calls for sunny skies.
Doubles Play
- Alabama State captured the doubles point with only two matches being played due to Bethune-Cookman defaulting at number three. The team of Urska Velec (Maribor, Slovenia) and Anja Hribljan (Novi Sad, Serbia) won the point for the Hornets with a 6-1 victory at number two over the team of Selene Kentish and Jourdon Cooper.
- The number one doubles team of Sahra Bouchaala (Aix-En-Provence, France) and Ana Tarbujaru (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) was leading 5-2 when the doubles' point was decided.
Singles Play
- Alabama State led 3-0 overall after a pair of matches (number five and six) were defaulted by Bethune-Cookman, and clinched the match after a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Timothee Legaud (Severac, France) over Cooper at number four.
- The Hornets won two of the remaining three matches including a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number one by Bouchaala, and a 6-1, 6-1 victory by Francesca Duca (Ploiesti, Romania).
- The lone win by Bethune-Cookman came at number two.
Up Next
- Alabama State continues their play in conference action against Prairie View A&M on Friday, March 11 at 2 pm. They will also face Grambling State (Saturday) and Southern (Sunday).
