Hornets sweep pair of matches, Velec clinches in both

Alabama State finishes weekend off undefeated

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State finished off an unbeaten weekend in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pod II at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center with a pair of sweeps on Monday. Alabama State (7-5, 6-1 SWAC) finished off sweeps of Alcorn State and Grambling State with Urska Velec (Maribor, Slovenia) clinching both matches in the two sessions.

Match vs. Alcorn State (morning session)
  • Velec went undefeated in the opening match of the day, teaming with her partner Bea Acena (Dubai, UAE) to win their doubles match 6-4.
  • They were joined in the win column by the number three team of Timothee Legaud (Severac, France) and Sahra Bouchaala (Aix-En-Provence, France) with a 6-0 win to claim the doubles point.
  • In singles play, Francesca Duca (Ploiesti, Romania) won her match at number four singles 6-2, 6-1 and Ana Tarbujaru (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number six singles to set the stage for Velec.
  • The senior clinched her match at number two with 6-0, 6-3 victory over Kimberley Kaome.
Match vs. Grambling State (afternoon session)
  • The Hornets used wins by the number two team (Velec/Acena) and number three team (Bouchaala/Legaud) to pick up the doubles point and go up 1-0.
  • They extended their lead when they won a pair of singles match including Bouchaala picking up her first singles win of the day at number one 6-0, 6-0 over Itzel Hernandez, while her teammate Lizaveta Demchenko (Mogilev, Belarus) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number three.
  • Velec again clinched for Alabama State with a 6-3, 6-1 win at number two over Lungile Ntuli.
