Alabama State completes sweep of St. Bonaventure

Hornets score 40 runs in three-game series sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State scored 29 runs in a pair of games on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from St. Bonaventure and completing a three-game sweep at the Wheeler Watkins Baseball Complex. Alabama State (6-7) erupted for double-digit runs in all three games this weekend, scoring 40 total runs in the series.

Cristopher DeGuzman had a career day in the first game of the doubleheader, helping Alabama State to a 16-7 victory before they wrapped the series with a 13-3 win. The senior shortstop went 6-for-6 in game one with five runs batted in and four runs scored, collecting a pair of doubles and a stolen base for the Hornets who pounded out 15 hits.

Angel Jimenez finished 2-for-2 with four runs scored, while Chris Lewis and Christian Lopez each added two hits.

Kyler McIntosh (1-2), one of six pitchers used in the game, picked up the win working 4.0 innings of relief, coming for starter Osvaldo Mendez. The freshman finished with seven strikeouts while giving up five runs.

In the nightcap, Austin King (2-1) picked up the win going 5.0 innings and giving up just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and was one of four pitchers used by Alabama State. When the right hander left it was a 2-1 contest before the Hornets erupted for 10 runs in the seventh inning.

The Hornets pounded out 11 hits in the finale, led by Lopez who finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. He also connected on a double, one of three for Alabama State in the final game of the series. Jimenez also finished 3-for-5 on the night with a pair RBIs and a home run.

Hunter May finished with a pair of hits, while Lewis added a pair of RBI.

Alabama State returns to action on the road Wednesday afternoon in Birmingham against UAB. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.
