Hornets fall to UAB on the road on chilly Wednesday night

Alabama State heads to Grambling State for a non-conference series this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State jumped on top of UAB early in the contest, but the Blazers answered with three in the sixth and held on for a 3-2 victory at Young Memorial Field on a chilly Wednesday night.

Alabama State (6-8) scored a run in each of the third and fourth inning, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead for starter Adiel Melendez (Miami, Fla.). The Blazers were able to get to Payton Harris (Hattiesburg, Miss.) for one run in the sixth. Harris (0-2) went 1.2 innings and allowed one (earned) off three hits while walking three.
Melendez went 5.0 innings in the start and allowed two runs (both earned) off three hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Alabama State was held to just four hits, however, they drew four walks as a team.

The Hornets had a chance in the top of the ninth when they got a pair of runners on (at second and third) with two out before the final out was recorded.

How It Happened
  • T3 | Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) drove in the Hornets' first run of the game when he singled to right field to score Jabronski Williams (Troy, Ala.) from third (1-0, Alabama State).
  • T4 | Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) scored on a wild pitch (2-0, Alabama State).
  • B6 | UAB scored their first run of the game on single through the right side off the bat of Christian Hall to score both John Marc Mullins and Matthew Golda, followed by an RBI single by Henry Hunter to give the Blazers the lead (3-2, UAB).
