NEW ORLEANS, La. Â | Top-seeded Alabama State advanced to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship match with a 4-0 shutout of defending champion Alabama A&M at the Pepsi Tennis Center on Saturday. The Hornets advance to the championship match where they will face No. 2 seed Jackson State.
How It Happened – Doubles
- Alabama State breezed to the doubles point with wins at number two and three including a 6-1 victory by Matis Amier (Epernay, France) and David Jeanne Grandinot (Lisieux, France) at number three.
- The number two team of Ruan Du Preez (Cape Town, South Africa) and Samrakshyak Bajracharya (Kathmandu, Nepal) won their match easily over Freddie Lawrence and German Ruiz Crespo 6-2, while the number one match was tied at 4-all when doubles was decided.
How It Happened – Singles
- The Hornets won three matches in singles play to finish off the sweep of their in-state rival beginning with a 6-3, 6-0 victory by Du Preez at number one over Vence Nicha. They continued with a 6-2, 6-4 victory by Grandinot at number four to go up 3-0 overall.
- The semifinal match was clinched with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Amier over Ramis at number five.
