GULFPORT, Miss. | Prairie View A&M jumped on two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alabama State early with right runs in the second inning on its way to a 9-1 victory in the tournament championship game at the Gulfport Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.
Alabama State (24-31), playing in its seventh consecutive conference championship game, forced the "if necessary" game with a pair of wins on Friday before giving up the big inning to the Panthers. The big blow came on a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the inning to double the 4-0 lead for Prairie View A&M.
Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) suffered the loss, working 2.0 innings and allowing eight runs (all earned) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts before giving way to
Ashley Pye (Stockton, Calif.). Pye worked the final 4.0 innings allowing one runs on two hits. At the plate, the Hornets were held to five hits all singles by five different players.
Alabama State had three players named Al-Tournament for their performance over the course of the week including
Jaeda Gardner (Pike Road, Ala.),
Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.), and Greenlee who finished the tournament with 33.0 innings pitched.
How It Happened
- B2 | Brandi Juarez drew a bases-loaded walk followed by an Audrey Garcia triple to left center to clear the bases, before the inning ended with a pinch-hit grand slam off the bat of Jerrica Rojas (8-0, Prairie View A&M).
- B3 | Biviana Figueroa drew a bases-loaded walk (9-0, Prairie View A&M).
- T5 | Jazmine Dodd (Bentonville, Ark.) singled and advanced to second on a throw that scored Greenlee (9-1, Prairie View A&M).
