PHILADELPHIA, Penn. | Alabama State opened play in the PGA Works at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale (men) and the Union League Liberty Hill (women) on Monday morning with each faring well through the first 18 holes.
The men find themselves in sixth place overall after the opening round after an opening round 299, three shots behind Chicago State (296) in fifth and four behind UAPB (295) in fourth. Texas Southern leads after the opening round with a score of 289, while Howard (290) is in second and Florida A&M (293) in third.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, Alabama State finished the opening round tied with Prairie View A&M in eighth with a 353. They are just five shots behind Texas Southern who shot an opening round 348. Delaware State leads the tournament with an opening round 310.
Men's Tournament
- Thomas Caddell (Vance, Ala.) leads the Hornets through the opening round, firing an even par 72 to head into clubhouse in 10th place overall through the first 18 holes. He is joined in the top 20 by a pair of teammates, Gonzalo Moreno (Seville, Spain) and Max Adams (London, England) with identical opening rounds of 3-over 75.
- Ty Roberts (Canyon, Texas) finished the opening round tied for 30th overall with a 5-over par 77, while Bishop Stringer (Cecil, Ala.) is tied for 35th with an opening round seven-over 79.
Women's Tournament
- McKenzie LeDuff (Lake Charles, La.) led Alabama State through the opening round with an 86 to enter the clubhouse in 27th overall, while a pair of teammates Katie Robinson (American Canyon, Calif.) and Iman Adams (Cape Town, South Africa) turned in opening rounds of 88.
- Tia Kimbrough (Bellville, Ill.) and Hallie Bridgers (Baltimore, Md.) finished the opening round in 39th and 40th respectively.
