Alabama State falls to Georgia in opening round of NCAA play

Hornets finish the season 12-7 overall, undefeated in conference play

ATHENS, Ga. | Alabama State returned to NCAA play for the first time since 2019, falling to No. 11 Georgia 4-0 at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in NCAA First Round action. The loss brought an end to the career of the Hornets' lone senior, Chris Andre (Berlin, Germany).

The Hornets dropped the doubles' point with losses at number one and number two before the match at number three was halted when the point was decided. Georgia won the top three singles' spots on Friday to clinch the match with three other matches in progress including a match at number six heading to three sets. Alabama State (13-6) rolled through the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) this season with seven matches and won six non-conference matches during the 2022 season including wins over UAB, Southern Miss, and Samford.

How It Happened – Doubles
  • Georgia captured the doubles' point to jump ahead in the match 1-0 overall with wins at number two and number three, while number one was halted when the point was decided.
  • The Bulldogs grabbed the advantage in play with a 6-1 victory by Britton Johnston and Erik Grevelius at number one over the Alabama State team of Matis Amier (Epernay, France) and David Jeanne Grandinot (Lisieux, France), before clinching the point with a 6-3 victory by Trent Bryde and Blake Croyder over Alabama State's Ruan Du Preez (Cape Town, South Africa) and Samrakshyak Bajracharya (Kathmandu, Nepal) at number two.
How It Happened - Singles
  • Georgia pushed the team score to 2-0 when Trent Bryde defeated Bajracharya at number two singles 6-1, 6-2 before the Bulldogs were able to win two more matches to clinch the match.
  • Philip Henning defeated Du Preez at number one singles 7-5, 6-2; while Croyder defeated Chris Andre (Berlin, Germany) 6-4, 6-4 at number three singles. Meanwhile, Kristofer Johnson (Bromley, UK) split the first two sets in his match at number six with Johnson 6-3, 4-6 before the overall match was decided.
