Dr. Cable, @BamaStateSports Welcome Eight New Staff Members

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State University Director of Athletics Dr. Jason Cable announced the addition of seven new members to the Hornets' athletic staff on Thursday, July 13, 2022.

Cyrus Russ, Jessica Madison, Jeremiah Streeter, Courtney Perkins, Craig Howard, and Joe Smith joined the staff on the administrative side along with Megan Fox and Christy Daniels as additional staff members.

"I am excited to welcome the new additions to our nest," Cable said. " Each individual has a unique wealth of knowledge and experience in their respective area. All will be invaluable to my staff and me as we continue to build our brand and support our student-athletes at the highest level."

 
CRUSS
Cyrus Russ
Cyrus Russ will serve as the Deputy Director of Athletics for External Operations. He comes to the nest after serving as the Interim Director of Athletics at Alcorn State University (2021-22). Russ was appointed to the interim role after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. Russ initially served as Alcorn's Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance from 2017-2019 before being promoted to Assistant Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Student Athlete Services from July 2019 to May 2021.

Russ transitioned into civilian life after a distinguished and successful career as a United States Army officer.  Since his transition from the Army, Russ has served in the sports industry in various capacities, including Regional Director for Athletes for College, Executive Director of the Leatherheads Athletic Association, and coach at the NUC Sports.
 
Russ brings more than 20 years of leadership and executive management experience to the Alabama State athletic staff.  He is a transformational leader and fervent in his pursuit of excellence in all endeavors.
 
Madison takes over as the Assistant Athletic Director for Development & Marketing, where she will oversee the advancement, development, and marketing initiatives for ASU athletics, including

fundraising and athletic alumni relations.

With a career expanding over 17 years, Madison had served in many capacities in Fortune 500 and professional sports settings, including WNBA and NASCAR. In professional sports, Madison has served as Marketing Manager and Manager of Ticket Sales for the three-time WNBA Eastern Conference Champions, the Atlanta Dream. Madison has also been a member of the NASCAR communications team with NASCAR, and Communications, Marketing and Partnership Development Director for Key Motorsports, Inc. Additionally, Madison serves as an advisor for various initiatives for the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Falcons.

She has also served in different marketing and sales capacities with Fortune 500 companies such as Gartner, Wayfair, Home Depot and Spectra Experiences, and AT&T.

Madison, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as well as numerous professional organizations, earned both her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a minor in Marketing (2003) and her Master of Science in Sport Management with a minor in Sports Administration (2007) from Troy University. Currently, Madison is completing her Doctor of Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship from Walden
University.

Jeremiah Streeter
Streeter will serve as ASU's Academic Advisor and Life Skills Coordinator coming to the Capitol City after serving as an Assistant Academic Advisor for football and track and field at Louisiana State University.

During his time with LSU, he assisted with day-to-day academic operations for the men's and women's track and Field program. He also helped coordinate the Breakfast Club Program with the freshmen football athletes, helping assist with their time management and organization skills throughout their transition into college.

Before LSU, Streeter served as a Student-Athlete Development Coordinator at Southeast Missouri State University. He helped athletes identify and achieve their career and professional goals. through the creation of "The Next Step" program. The program focused on the holistic development of student-athletes to advance them toward success at SEMO and in life through career development, leadership development, and personal development. Streeter also served as the head SAAC Advisor.

Streeter earned a bachelor's degree from Alabama State University (2018) in Interdisciplinary Studies. He is also a former Track and Field Athlete at ASU. He later earned a master's degree in Athletic Leadership Studies from Clemson University (2020)."
Courtney Perkins will direct the Hornets' Sports Medicine team as the Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.

Perkins takes over as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, coming to Alabama State from South Carolina State University.

As an undergraduate for the University North Carolina, she worked with the Tar Heel football, softball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field teams.

Perkins continued to advance her skills as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina, working with the Gamecock track and field teams in her first year before moving to Claflin University, a Division II university in Orangeburg, S.C. for her second year.

Upon graduating, Perkins became the Head Athletic Trainer at Claflin University before moving on to South Carolina State University to serve as the Head Football Athletic trainer during their 2021-2022 season as HBCU National Champions.

Perkins earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science, with a concentration in athletic training, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018. Shi is a proud member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and Alabama Athletic Training Association. She is also a certified American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor.

 
Megan
Megan Fox
Fox is one of two new assistant athletic trainers after recently graduating from the University of South Florida with a bachelor's in health sciences with a minor in nutrition. She also earned a master's in athletic training. She received several awards from both the athletic training program and USF health for service and advocation for the Athletic training profession.

Fox completed clinical rotations at multiple levels from high school to the professional setting. Most of her experience includes working with soccer and softball teams but she has also been involved in many other sports in some capacity.

Daniels joins the staff as an assistant athletic trainer after one year with Encore Sports Medicine in Dothan, Ala., in 2021-22. During that year, Daniels completed her master's degree in business and sports business from Saint Leo University.  Daniels covered men's and women's track and cross country, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's lacrosse, and women's basketball during SLU tenure.  

Daniels is no stranger to Alabama State, working part-time with football and during the SWAC Softball Champions for the sports medicine department in 2017-18. That same year, Daniels also worked with Drayer Physical Therapy Institute covering Prattville High School athletics.

Daniels earned a bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Troy University in 2017.

Howard was named as the General Manager of Hornets Sports Properties, joining the staff on April 2022. The Phenix City, Ala., native will assist athletic leadership in exploring sponsorship

opportunities, bringing with him a wealth of experience in athletics and advertising.

Howard joins ASU athletics after a stint in coaching and teaching at Auburn High School.

Before his stop in Auburn, he was Director of Sales for OnMedia Communications, where he was responsible for developing new business and client retention and growth. He has also served as the general manager for Green Cable Communications, along with stops with several advertising firms.

Howard received his bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Alabama in 1997.

Joe Smith joined the Hornet Sports Properties team as an account executive in June 2022, following almost two years as an admissions counselor at Eastern Illinois University. In the summer of 2022, he joined his former organization Peak Sports Management in his current position as an account executive for ASU. At ASU, Smith handles sponsorships fulfillment and activations and corporate sponsorships.

Joe Smith
Before transitioning to an academic counselor, Smith was the account executive for Panther athletics overseeing corporate sponsorships. As an academic counselor for the admissions department, Smith recruited students in the Southern Illinois and Metro East area of Missouri. During that time, Smith garnered over 700 applications and helped over 550 students get accepted into the university.

Before Eastern Illinois, Staff Smith was a decorated four-year letterman at Eastern Illinois University. As a jumper, Smith won four Ohio Valley Conference titles and was a four-time All-OVC performer and two-time NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the triple jump.

Smith graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in sports management in 2018 and received his master's degree in sports administration in 2020.
