Lady Hornets Fall Short to Trojans Despite Ten Kills from Bates

TROY, Ala. - Kalysia Bates tallied double-digit kills for the fifth time this season but the Lady Hornets' scoring effort wasn't enough as the Troy University Trojans swept Alabama State 3-0 in the first match of the Trojan Invitational on Thursday, September 15, 2022, inside Trojan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET ONE
  • Kalysia Bates picked up the first kill for Alabama State to even the score at one apiece early in the first set.
  • Alabama State put together a 2-0 scoring run to knot the score at 8-8 on a kill from Christyn Ashby and a block from Kalysia Bates.
  • The Trojans opened up a 7-0 streak to extend their advantage to 15-8 midway through set one.
  • Troy took the first set 25-18 despite four kills from Kalysia Bates in set one.
SET TWO
  • Amaya Finley started set two off with the first kill but Troy would jump out to an early 4-2 advantage.
  • Both teams found themselves knotted at eight once against before Troy scored three straight to take an 11-8 lead.
  • The Lady Hornets pulled within four (21-17) late in the second set but Troy would finish off on a 4-1 run to secure the second set victory, 25-18.
SET THREE
  • Kalysia Bates recorded the first kill for ASU in set three to knot the score at one apiece early on.
  • ASU jumped out to a 7-5 advantage behind a service ace from Brooke Adams, four service errors, and an attack error from Troy.
  • Troy went on a 6-0 scoring run to hold an 11-7 edge over Alabama State. 
  • ASU responded with a 4-0 run to knot the score at 11 apiece.
  • Both teams traded scores until the Trojans held a 21-20 lead over the Lady Hornets late in the third set. 
  • Troy secured the sweep with a 4-1 finish in the third to claim the 25-21 victory over ASU.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Lady Hornets recorded 25 total kills with an attack percentage of .127, while Troy tallied 38 kills for a .265 hit percentage.
  • Kalysia Bates registered her fifth double-digit kill match this season with 10 kills and two solo blocks against Troy. 
  • Emily Brooks led ASU in assists with 11 followed by 10 from Brooke Adams..
  • Temperance Chatman tallied a team-high 13 digs at libero for ASU which is good for her fourth double-digit dig match of the season. 
  • On the defensive end, Mahogany Vinson picked up a team-high four solo blocks.
  • Tori Hester led Troy in kills with a game-high 13 on 28 total attacks.
  • Amara Anderson had a game-high 29 assists in the setter position for the Trojans.

The Lady Hornets return to action tomorrow, September 16, 2022, for day two of the Trojan Invitational as they take on Jacksonville University at 3 p.m. in Trojan Arena.
