Hornets Men’s Tennis Wins HBCU National Tennis Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Alabama State men's and women's tennis team traveled to College Park, Georgia this past weekend to compete in the HBCU National Tennis Championships. The men's team won the title with 30 points, while the women's team placed fourth with 21.5 points, respectively. 

SINGLES PLAY 

FLIGHT A


Ruan Du Preez competed first for the Hornets, advancing to the final with wins over Tennessee State's Taj Hibbert (7-6, 6-4), Xavier University's Mathieu Strauss (6-2, 7-5) and finished singles play with a final round loss to Tennessee State's Jonasz Dziopak (7-5, 6-0). 

Samrakshyak Bajracharya also competed in the Fight A singles brack for ASU. Bajracharya advanced to the quarterfinal with a round of 16 win over Tennessee State Nil Moinet (6-1, 6-2) before falling to NCCU's Sebastian Pino (6-3, 6-3).

FLIGHT B

David Jeanne-Grandinot advanced to the final in the Flight B bracket after a round of 32 victory over Tuskegee's Noah Johnson (6-1, 6-0), a round of 16 win over Alcorn's Dakota Fernandez (6-0, 6-0) a quarterfinal win over Tennessee State's Pierre Copin (6-3, 6-2), a semifinal victory over TSU's Nicholas Adamec (6-3) before defeating teammate Matis Amier in the final (6-2).

Matis Amier saw success in the Flight B bracket as well, advancing to the final with wins over Johnson C. Smith's Alijah D Leslie (6-4, 6-0), Shaw University's Tom Letecheur (6-1, 6-0), TSU's Diego Britt-Alvarez (6-2, 6-3), AAMU's Maties Torres-Ramis (6-2, 6-3) before falling to ASU teammate David Jeanne-Grandinot (6-2). 

FLIGHT C

Kristofer Johnson also competed in a final round match after opening Flight C bracket play with victories over Josue Blocus (6-0, 6-0), JCSU's Jerome Adonis (6-0, 6-0), Xavier's Vander Woody (6-2, 2-6, [10-5]) a semifinal win over AAMU's Arnav Pathange (6-4, 6-4) before falling to Xavier's Nereo Suarez (6-3, 7-6, 6-3) in the final. 

DOUBLES PLAY

FLIGHT A


Ruan Du Preez and Samrakshyak Bajracharya dominated in doubles play after advancing to the final with a quarterfinal win over the NCCU duo of Sebastian Pino and Oliver Saarinen (7-5), a semifinal victory over TSU's Jonasz Dziopak and Taj Hibbert (6-1) before a narrow final defeat to Xavier's Vander Woody and Jacobi Bain (6-3). 

FLIGHT B

Matis Amier and David Jeanne-Grandinot proved to be quite a successful duo as well after winning the final in the Flight B Doubles bracket. The duo started with a round of 32 win over Tuskegee's Christopher Howard and Symon Brown (6-1), a round of 16 win over TSU duo Pierre Copin and Nil Moinet (6-1), a semifinal edge of Xavier's Guillermo Coiras and Jered Wilson (6-4), before defeating the ASU duo of Kristofer Johnson and Louca Bertone (6-3)

Kristofer Johnson and Louca Bertone advanced to the Flight B bracket final as well for ASU. The duo lost in the final to the ASU duo of Matis Amier and David Jeanne-Grandinot (6-3). Before reaching the final, they took down Xavier's Mathieu Strauss and Nereo Suarez in the round of 16 (6-4), JCSU's Alijah D Leslie and Kofi Bowe (6-2) in the quarterfinal, and AAMU's Arnav Panthage and Freddie Lawrence (7-5).

The Hornets will travel to Samford on September 30, 2022, for the Samford Hidden Dual.
