Hornets Volleyball Split a Pair Of Matches to Open the ISTAP HBCU Volleyball Challenge

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama State University (ASU) women's volleyball team opened up their first match of the ISTAP HBCU Volleyball Challenge with a 3-0 win against the South Carolina State University Bulldogs (SCSU) behind a game-high nine-kill match from ASU's Taniya Jones.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Alabama State held an early 3-0 lead capped by Madison Beasley assisting Mahogany Vinson on the kill in the first set. 
Alabama State took the first set 25-10 after finishing on a 5-0 scoring run
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on to secure a dominating 25-8 victory to go up 2-0. 
Alabama State looked poised for a sweep as they once again jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third set.
The Lady Hornets secured the sweep with a 25-14 win over SCSU to get their first win of the season in their home opener. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

Madison Beasley continues to dominate in the setter role for the Hornets after recording 22 assists and a career-high five service aces against South Carolina State. 
 Taniya Jones, led the Hornets with a game-high eight kills, followed by Bates, Kalysia with seven kills, and Mahogany Vinson with six on the day.
Temperance Chatman led ASU in digs with a game-high 13 against followed by 10 from Jada Rhodes
Semira Fields registered 7 kills, meanwhile, Siela Avea recorded 8 assists for the Bulldogs in their first match of the day. 
The Lady Hornets swept the Bulldogs 3-0, winning the last set 25-14. 

MATCH TWO VS. COPPIN STATE

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Despite ten kills from Kalysia Bates and 22 assists from Madison Beasley, the Lady Hornets (1-9) fell short to the Coppin State Eagles (3-6) 3-1 in their second match of the ISTAP HBCU Volleyball Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

The Lady Hornets were able to keep the score close at 7-5 until the Eagles made a run and won the first set 25-17. 
After a shaky start in the first set for Alabama State, the Lady Hornets bounced back in the second with a dominant 25-13 after finishing on a 5-0 scoring run to even things at 1-1. 
● Coppin State claimed the third set with a 25-12 win to extend their advantage to 2-1 in the match
● Alabama State held an early 5-2 lead in the fourth set capped off by a kill from Kalysia Bates. ​​​​​​​
● Despite a close game from the Hornets, Coppin State held on to take the fourth set, 25-21 and secure the 3-1 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

Madison Beasley recorded 22 assists in her second-straight match, bringing her season total to a team-high 162. 
● Kalysia Bates led the Lady Hornets in kills with 10 and two service aces on the day
Jada Rhodes led ASU in digs with 12 in their last match of the day. 
Coppin State's Andrea Tsvetanova registered a game-high 32 assists while Ashley Roman led the Eagles with 29 digs. 
ASU dominated on the defensive end with five blocks compared to four for Coppin State.
