Hornets Fall To Alcorn State in Overtime

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Despite a season-high 353 tyards and 257 yards rushing, Alabama State University (1-3, 0-2 SWAC) fell to Alcorn State University  23-20 in overtime on Saturday at the New ASU Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets had one red zone opportunity but fumble at the one-yard line to end the drive.
  • A Noah Kiani 39-yard field to close the first quarter gave the Braves a 3-0 lead to start the second quarter.
  • Jaylen Sulton's two-yard run capped a 10-play 75-yard drive to put the Hornets ahead 7-3 with 9:10 left in the first half.
  • Aaron Allen tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Akeem McNair put Alcorn State back in front 10-7 with 6:20 left in the second quarter.
  • Marcus Harris II scored on a 10-yard rush to give the Hornets a 13-10 lead with under three minutes left in the second quarter.  
  • The Hornets had a chance to add to the lead on the final play of the first half, but John Jayden's 47-yard field goal just nicked under the cross bar.
  • Allen hooked up with Monterio Hunt for a 54-yard touchdown to give Alcorn State a 17-13 midway through the third quarter.
  • Tre Phillips blocked a Kiani 39-yard field goal attempt that was recovered and returned 75 yards for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 20-17 lead with 9:20 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Alabama State had a chance to ice the game but fumble in the red zone ended the drive.
  • Alcorn State took advantage of an Alabama State turnover in the red zone using 13 plays to drive 89 yards for the game tying field goal.
  • Kiani made a 24-yard field goal on the final play of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 20 and force overtime.
  • Kiani then made a 30-yard field goal opening drive of overtime to give the Braves a 23-20 lead.
  • Alabama State's drive stalled only to see a 27-yard field goal attempt sail wide to end the game.
