Whitten records 1,000th career kill, Lady Hornets roll to eighth straight

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Jylen Whitten recorded her 1,000th career kill to help Alabama State run its winning streak to eight with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-6) victory over Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Monday afternoon.
 
Whitten, needing just nine kills to reach the milestone, finished the match with 11 kills giving her 1,002 for her career. She was joined in double figures by Jada Rhodes with 13, giving her 899 career kills and leaving her just four kills shy of sixth place all-time at Alabama State.
 
Emily Brooks led Alabama State (9-12, 8-0 SWAC) with 17 assists, while Madison Beasley added 15 in the match giving her 1,970 for her career. Whitten also led Alabama State with nine digs, while Rhodes added six and Temperance Chatman six in the win.
 
The Lady Hornets finished the match with a season-high attack percentage of .437.
 
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Lady Hornets ran out to an 8-2 lead before going on a 10-1 to open up an 18-4 lead using a pair of kills from A'Nylah Cobb and Whitten. After Mississippi Valley State closed to 20-7, the Lady Hornets went on a 5-0 run to seal the first set using a pair of services from Beasley and a kill from Whitten.
 
SET 2 | After Mississippi Valley State tied the set at 1-all, Alabama State went on a 7-0 run to open an 8-1 lead using kills from Rhodes and Taila Gaines and a service ace from Whitten. After the Devilettes closed to 13-10, Alabama State went on a 6-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. They closed the set on a 6-1 run to claim a 2-0 overall lead using a pair of kills from Whitten and another from Rhodes.
 
SET 3 | The Lady Hornets ran out to a 9-3 lead before Mississippi Valley State closed the deficit to 13-6, but that was the final point for the Devilettes as Alabama State went on a 12-0 run to end the match behind the serving of Beasley.

Alabama State returns home to face Florida A&M at Lockhart Gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 20, with the match slated for 6 p.m. before facing Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, Oct. 22.
