DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Alabama State came back from one set down to defeat Grambling State 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22) in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action in the SWAC Cluster 2 at Moore Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
Jada Rhodes led Alabama State with 14 kills, while
Jylen Whitten added 10 and
A'Nylah Cobb nine in the win.
Madison Beasley led Alabama State (12-12, 11-0 SWAC) with 26 assists with
Emily Brooks adding 19.
Temperance Chatman led the team with 26 digs, while Whitten finished off her double-double with 16 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Grambling State grabbed the first set after running out to an 11-8 lead on a 3-0 run before Alabama State pulled to within two at 12-10. The lead grew to 14-10 before the Lady Hornets used a pair of kills from Rhodes and another from Cobb to tie the set at 14-all. Alabama State took an 18-17 lead before Grambling State went on a 4-0 run to grab a 21-18 lead. The Lady Hornets battled back to take a 22-21 lead using a kill from Gaines during the run before Grambling State scored four of the final five points to grab the opening set.
SET 2 | Grambling State took an early 6-4 lead before the Lady Hornets used a 3-0 run using kills from Rhodes and Cobb to grab a 7-6 lead. They would use a 4-0 run shortly thereafter to grab an 11-7 lead before the Tigers scored six of the next seven points to take a 13-12 lead. Alabama State came back to grab the lead at 18-16 using a kill from Cobb and a service ace from Whitten. After Grambling State tied the set up at 23-all, Alabama State used a pair of Grambling State errors to win the set and tie the match overall.
SET 3 | After the two teams traded the first eight points, Alabama State went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead using a pair of kills from Rhodes. They extended the lead to 11-6 using a service ace from Brooks, then 19-11 on a block from
Taila Gaines and
Ch
ristyn Ashby. Grambling State used a 4-0 run to climb to within four at 24-20 before the Lady Hornets won the set on a Whitten kill.
SET 4 | A 6-0 run broke a tie and gave Alabama State a 12-6 lead using kills from Whitten and
Kaylen Hines. The lead hovered around six before a 3-0 run by Grambling trimmed the deficit to 20-18. A kill from Whitten pushed the lead to 21-18 before Grambling State came back to take a 22-21 lead using a 4-0 run. The Lady Hornets ended the run by Grambling State using a 4-0 run to end the match. They used kills from Ashby and Rhodes to along with a service ace from Whitten.
