MEMPHIS, Tenn. | CJ Hines paced three players in double figures in a 92-75 road loss to Memphis at the FedEx Forum on Friday.
Hines finished the night with 19 points on 50 (7-of-14) percent shooting from the floor including five three-pointers. He also added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the loss. Meanwhile,
TJ Madlock finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while
D'Ante Bass added 14 points and six rebounds.
Alabama State (1-3) finished the night shooting 31.4 (27-of-86) percent from the floor and 38.5 (10-of-26) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 73.3 (11-of-15) percent from the free throw line while forcing 18 Memphis turnovers.
David Jones led Memphis (3-0) with 22 points, while Jahvan Quinerly added 16. Jaykwon Walton added 12 and Caleb Mills 10 for the Tigers who finished the night shooting 52.5 (32-of-61) percent from the floor and 44.0 (11-of-25) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished the night shooting 73.9 (17-of-23) percent from the free throw line.
How It Happened
- Memphis built a 12-point lead at 24-12 with 11:25 to play in the first half on a Caleb Mills three-pointer, however, Alabama State went on an 18-7 run to pull to within 31-30 with 5:12 to play in a Madlock jumper.
- The Tigers pushed the lead to eight before an Eric Coleman free throw trimmed the deficit to 38-33 with 3:04 to play in the half. The Tigers closed the first half on a 9-4 run to take a 47-36 lead at intermission.
- The lead grew back to 12 in the second half before a Hines three-pointer with 14:55 to play in the game trimmed the deficit to 55-49.
- The Hornets got the deficit to five at 58-53 on a Hines jumper with 13:24 to play before Memphis went on a 16-2 run to open the game up with 8:49 to play.
Alabama State Notes
- Tony Madlock returned home as the head coach of the Hornets to Memphis where he starred alongside Penny Hardaway for then-Memphis State, and later served as an assistant coach for the program.
- The Hornets also had three players return to their home city of Memphis TJ Madlock, Amarr Knox, and Tadarius Jacobs.
- The loss was the third road loss of the season for the Hornets, all to teams who are undefeated at this point in the season.
- Alabama State returns to the state of Alabama where it will play six of its next seven games including a home game on Dec. 19 against USC.
