MONTGOMERY, Ala. | A'Nylah Cobb became the latest player to reach a milestone for Alabama State as she led the Lady Hornets to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-15) Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Alabama A&M at Lockhart Gymnasium on Friday night.
The win clinched the outright regular season championship and top seed for the upcoming tournament for Alabama State (15-12, 14-0 SWAC), winners of 14 consecutive victories.
Cobb, who became the latest member of the 500-kill club, led the way with 12 kills, while
Jylen Whitten and
Jada Rhodes each added 10 in the straight-set win.
Emily Brooks led the Lady Hornets with 20 assists and a pair of service aces, while
Madison Beasley added 17.
Defensively, Rhodes finished with 10 to record a double-double on the night, while
Temperance Chatman added nine.
Christyn Ashby led the Lady Hornets with five blocks, while
Taila Gaines and
Kaylen Hines each added four.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Alabama State jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the opening set using kills from Ashby, Beasley, and Rhodes. The lead expanded to 18-5 after a 7-1 run by the Lady Hornets using the serves of Chatman. Alabama A&M was able to close to 20-10 before the Lady Hornets went on a 3-1 run using kills from Hines and Cobb, and a service ace from Chatman to end it for a 1-0 lead.
SET 2 | Alabama State jumped out to a 6-3 lead before Alabama A&M close to within a point at 8-7. From there, the two teams traded points until Alabama A&M went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 15-all and extended it to 19-17. After a timeout, Alabama State went on a 6- run to take a 23-20 lead, and closed out the set with a kill from Rhodes.
SET 3 | The Lady Hornets led the set 6-4 before going on a 4-1 run to extend the lead to 10-5 on a kill from Cobb. After a point from the Bulldogs closed the gap to 10-6, Alabama State went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-6 lead using the 500th career kill from Cobb in the process. Alabama A&M was able to close the gap to 20-15 before back-to-back kills from Whitten ended the match.
