MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State University rebounded from its first loss of the season with a resounding 18-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Purdue-Ft. Wayne on Saturday at Wheeler-Watkins Sports Complex. The Hornets lost the first game, 4-3 but came back with a 22-hit performance in the second game. Of the 22 hits, three left the yard as nine batters earned at least one hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 1
- The Mastodons scored three runs in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to earn their first win of the 2023 season while handing Alabama State its first loss of the campaign.
- After Purdue-Fort Wayne scored three runs in the fourth, with two of those scoring on wild pitches, ASU picked up its first run in the fifth on Cristian Lopez doubled in Trenton Jamison to cut the Mastodon lead to 3-1.
- With the bases loaded in the sixth, Jack Hay reached on a fielder's choice with Randy Flores scoring to pull ASU to within a run, 3-2.
- Purdue-Ft. Wayne added to its lead in the top of the seventh on a Jarrett Bickel double that scored Eli Tencza.
- Ali Lapread hit his first homer of the season in the bottom half of the seventh to allow the Hornets to inch closer.
- The Hornets threatened to tie the game in the ninth with Hay's double down the third-base line to lead off the inning. Lopez's sacrifice moved Hay to third. But pinch-runner Devonte Bailey was left stranded after a strike out and ground out ended the threat.
ON THE MOUND - GAME 1
- Evimael Quiles made his first start of the season, going 3.1 innings and giving up three runs, all earned. He faced 14 batters and did now allow a hit but walked four. He struck out three and threw three wild pitches. He was tagged with the loss (0-1).
- Luis Rodriguez came in relief in the fourth and pitched 3.2 innings allowing a run on three hits. He struck out two and walked one.
- Sabastian Colon finished off the work on the mound for the Hornets, pitching two innings. He recorded one strikeout and did not allow a hit.
- Brendan Reid (1-0) came in relief to earn the win for Purdue-Ft. Wayne after starter Jacob Myer pitched 4-plus innings and gave up an earned run. Reid pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Justin Miller earned his first save of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX - GAME 2
- Hay and CLopez each had their first double of the season with both picking up an RBI.
- Corey King picked up two hits.
- Ali Lapread homered to center for his first dinger of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 2
- After Purdue-Ft. Wayne scored a run in the top of the first, ASU scored three times in the bottom half on a double by Kyler McIntosh. Trenton Jamison followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Jack Hay. Cristian Lopez singled in a run to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead after an inning.
- ASU came back with a Lopez two-run homer to give the Hornets a 5-2 lead after three.
- Jack Hay had a run-scoring single in the fourth make it 6-2.
- The Mastodons scored twice in the fifth but ASU answered with a run in its half with Trenton Jamison's solo homer that made it 7-4.
- The Hornets scored three times in the sixth on a McIntosh triple and Jameson's two-run single with two outs.
- The onslaught continued in the seventh with the Hornets putting up a five spot. Jack Hay had a two-run single and a three-run homer by Ian Matos.
- ASU put up another three runs in the eighth with Devin Chandler forcing in a run with a walk. The Hornets also scored on a double play and McIntosh's single.
ON THE MOUND - GAME 2
- Freshman Osvaldo Mendez made his first start and pitched four innings and was awarded the win (1-0). He gave up just one earned run (four total) on five hits. He struck out six and walked two.
- Sebastian Colon came in relief and pitched three innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. He recorded three strikeouts in his second appearance of the season.
- Shadai Colon pitched two innings and gave up two hits and walked a batter but had no further damage. He struck out two.
- Rex Sills (0-1) took the loss for Purdue-Ft. Wayne, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
INSIDE THE BOX - GAME 2
- Randy Flores finished with four hits in five plate appearances, scoring twice and stealing a base.
- Trenton Jamison had two hits including a home run and a sacrifice fly to plate four runs.
- Lopez logged three safeties including a homer and three RBIs.
- Ian Matos had a homer and a triple and three runs driven in plus he walked twice and scored three times.
- Hay, Kyle Kuramoto, and Jayden Sloan each had two hits in the win. Hay drove in three runs and scored twice. Sloan also scored two times.
- Devin Chandler had a walk and a run batted in.
UP NEXT: Alabama State and Purdue-Ft. Wayne closes out the four-game series on Sunday with the first pitch set for noon.
