Lopez and Matos Propel @BamaStateBB Past Southern

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Ian Matos and Cristian Lopez combined for four RBI to lead the Alabama State University baseball team to a 7-5 win over Southern University on Friday in the 15th Annual Andre Dawson Classic.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. 
  • Corey King delivered an RBI single to score Randy Flores, who led off with a single.
  • Ian Matos singled in the second run that scored Jack Hay. 
  • Southern got a run in the top of the second making the score 2-1.
  • Alabama State would score the next five runs of the game to build a 7-1 lead. 
  • Cristian Lopez scored on a ground out in the bottom of the second and Ian Matos doubled in a run in the third. 
  • Randy Flores singled and scored on a Hay single in the fourth after stealing second and third. 
  • Matos and Trenton Jamison were both hit by a pitch and would come around to score on a Cristian Lopez single to left. 
  • Southern would plate three runs in the eighth before LaBoy entered the game to get a ground out to end the threat. 
ON THE MOUND
  •  Richard Rivera (1-0) earned the win, scattering three hits with three strikeouts over 3.0 scoreless innings pitched. 
  •  Southern Starter Nicholas Wilson took the loss, yielding five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
INSIDE THE BOX UP NEXT: Alabama State closes out the Andre Dawson Classic against the University of New Orleans on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Maestri Field.
