Hornets Power Past Jackson State In Series Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala.| Alabama State University belted a season-high six home runs to power past Jackson State University 24-7 on Friday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.  

Corey King and Randy Flores combined for three home runs and 14 RBI. King was 4-for-5 with two-three-run home runs and seven RBI while Flores was 3-for-3 with a triple, a home run, and seven RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED  
  • Jackson State got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Jatavious Melton drove in the first run and Marcus Atterberry singled home two runs.  
  • Randy Flores tied the game with bases loaded triple and scored on a wild pitch to give the Hornets a 4-3 lead after two innings. 
  • The Hornets put up six runs in the third inning to build their lead to 10-3. Flores and King each had three-run home runs to highlight the inning.  
  • Eight runs crossed in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 18-3. King had a three-run home run and an RBI single, and Kyler McIntosh belted a three-run homer.  
  • Ali Lapresd got in on the home run parade with a three-run home run as part of a five-run fifth inning to extend the lead to 23-3. 
  • Jamal George's solo home run gave the Hornets a 24-3 lead in the sixth.  
  • Jackson State closed the scoring with four runs in the seventh to cut ASU's lead to 24-7.  
ON THE MOUND  
  • Omar Meledez (7-0) posted five strikeouts and gave up three runs on six hits to earn the win. 
  • Coby Guy (3-2) allowed 13 runs on 12 hits to take the loss for Jackson State 
INSIDE THE BOX  
  • The Hornets set season highs for runs (24), hits (23), and home runs (6).  
  • King was 4-for-5 with two-three-run home runs and seven RBI. 
  • King is 7-for-8 with four home runs and 12 RBI over the last two games.
