Hornets Battle Back To Split Twin Bill With MVSU

MONTGOMERY, Ala.| Alabama State University earned a 5-1 win over Mississippi Valley State in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Friday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.  

Ian Matos had four hits including two doubles while Kyler McIntosh went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and five RBI in the doublehader.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1  
  • The game was scoreless until the third when Victor Figueroa singled in two runs and a run scored on a Ty Washington sac-fly to give Mississippi Valley State a 3-0 lead.   
  • Alabama State tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the third. Kyler McIntosh doubled and scored on an Ian Matos single and Matos scored on an Ali Lapread double. Jack Hay singled and scored on Corey King's sac-fly.   
  • Davon Mims drove in two runs and Washington had an RBi single to put the Delta Devils back in front 6-3 in the top of the fifth.  
  • A Corey King two-out single brought Ali Lapread home to cut MVSU's lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth.   
  • McIntosh hit a two-run home run with Jayden Sloan onboard with a walk to tie the game 6-6.  
  • Dreylin Holmes hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the ninth to make the score 7-6.   
ON THE MOUND | GM 1  
  • Sebastian Colon (1-2) allowed a run on five hits with a strikeout as the pitcher of record for Alabama State.  
  • Zach Sigmon (3-3) worked 3.0 scoreless innings in relief of starter Calvin McClendon to pick up the win for the Delta Devils.

  • Matos had two hits including a double with an RBI.  
  • McIntosh had two hits including a two-run home run.   
  • King drove in two runs and had two hits.  
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2  
  • Maury Weaver led off the game with a double and Figueroa single to stake the Delta Devils to a 1-0 lead.  
  • Jamal George singled and scored on a Kyler McIntosh sac-fly and Matos doubled home McIntosh to give Alabama State a 2-1 lead in the third.   
  • Alabama State tacked on three runs seventh to extend the lead to 5-1. Flores drove in a run on a single and two runs scored on a McIntosh deep sacrifice fly to right.   
ON THE MOUND | GM 2  
  • Shadai Colon (2-0) struck out nine MVUS hitters while allowing one run on five hits to earn the win.  
  • Hunter Stallings (3-3) allowed four runs on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk to suffer the loss for MVSU.  
  • Jorhan LaBoy and Luis Rodriguez combined for three scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts to close the game.

  • Shadai Colon struck out a career-high nine batters.   
  • Flores had two hits, including a double, and moved his stolen bases to 28 on the season.   
  • Matos had two hits with a double.   
  • Jamal George had two hits and two runs scored.   
  • The Hornets had 10 hits and posted double-figure hits in a game for the 19th time this season.
