Madlock Announces Seven @BamaStateMBB Newcomers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University Head Men's Basketball Coach Tony Madlock announced the addition of seven newcomers, that includes D'Ante Bass, CJ Hines, Micah Octave, Tadarius Jacobs, Sean Smith, Ubong Okon, and Landon Coleman to the Hornets roster for the 2023-24 basketball season.

Bass is a 6' 6", 200-pound, forward, is transferring to Alabama State from Georgetown University. Before Georgetown, Bass prepped a Windsor, Forest High School in Savannah, Ga. Bass played in eight games during his freshman campaign with Hoyas. He averaged 13.3 points and 7.D'0 rebounds per game as a senior year at Windsor Forest High School, earning Region 3-AAA Player of the Year in 2022 He led Windsor Forest to the 2022 Georgia High School Association Class 3A basketball championship where he tallied a double-double with 22 points and 10 boards in the title game. 

QUOTING HEAD COACH TONY MADLOCK ON BASS: "D'Ante is a transfer from Georgetown University, he was a former 3 star recruit. He had multiple high major offers coming out of high school. He is an athletic wing that will be able to play multiple positions for us."

Hines is a 6' 3", 185, guard, transferring from NAIA Falkner University in Montgomery, Ala. The Atlanta, Ga., native played in 95 games with 70 starts, averaging 3.4 assists, 16.2 points, and five rebounds per game over three seasons. He shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 42.5 percent from 3-point range while sinking 79 percent from the charity stripe.  Hines earned NAIA First-Team All-American and SSAC Player of the Year honors along with First-Team All-SSAC accolades.

QUOTING HEAD COACH TONY MADLOCK ON HINES: "CJ is a transfer from Faulkner University, and was a NAIA 1st Team All American. He has been well coached and has a high basketball IG. CJ is going to bring a winning mentality and the ability to score the basketball to our program."

Octave is a 6' 5", 195, guard, transferring from Indian River State College in Ft., Pierce, Fla. Octave played 31 games, averaging 14.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists during his sophomore season in 2022-23. The Boca Raton, Fla., native was also a First-Team All-Conference selection. 

QUOTING HEAD COACH TONY MADLOCK ON OCTAVE: "Micah is a JC transfer from Indian River State College. He is a versatile wing that has the ability to be a very good defender and comes from a winning program."

Jacobs is a 6' 1", 170, guard, transferring from the University of Memphis in his hometown of Memphis, Tenn. Jacobs sat out the 2022-23 season as a redshirt after playing in 11 games during his true-freshman campaign with the Tigers. Before his time at Memphis, Jacobs played alongside James Wiseman, Chandler Lawson, Johnathan Lawson, and Alex Lomax at Bartlett High School under current Memphis Head Coach Penny Hardaway.

QUOTING HEAD COACH TONY MADLOCK ON JACOBS:  "TD is a transfer from the University of Memphis. He is a combo guard that has a toughness about him. He is going to be a good asset for our program."

Smith comes to Alabama State from John A. Logan College where was a guard for the Vols last season. The Louisville, Kentucky native averaged 8.2 points per game while shooting 51 percent from the floor, 46 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the charity stripe over 35 games.  He also averaged 3.0 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. 

QUOTING HEAD COACH TONY MADLOCK ON SMITH: "Sean is a JC transfer from John A Logan. He won a national championship in 2023. He is a crafty PG that brings a winning mentality and the ability to make plays for himself and teammates."

Okon transfers to Alabama State after two seasons at Georgia Highlands College.. Okon averaged  7.1 rebounds per game and 7.7 boards per game in conference play during his sophomore season. The Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, native shot 57 percent from the floor, blocked 72 shot and average 4.8 points per game in 33 games that included 32 starts. 

QUOTING HEAD COACH TONY MADLOCK ON OKON: "UB is a true Big Man. He is a JC transfer from Georgia Highlands College. A 7' footer that is an active rebounder and shot blocker. He will bring an inside presence to our program.

Coleman comes to Alabama State from Sliverado High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he starred as a guard for the last four seasons.
