Lady Hornets set to host UAB in home opener on Thursday night

The two teams have met three times in school history

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opens its 2023 home slate on Thursday night against in-state foe UAB with kick set for 6 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex.
 
Alabama State (0-1-1) is looking for its first win of the season after a season-opening loss to Jacksonville and a draw against Faulkner last week. The game is the first of two this week for the Lady Hornets as they travel to Mercer on Sunday for non-conference action.
 
Admission is free to home soccer matches.

Alabama State Notes
  • Lauryn Starwood made her debut in goal for the Lady Hornets in the first two games of the season, holding Faulkner to just one goal in the second game. She faced 17 total shots in the two games, recording 12 saves – including nine against Jacksonville.
  • Kensley Simmons (first career goal) and Kassandra Schoen each scored a goal in the two games thus far, while Camila Jimenez and Madison Chambers recorded assists.
  • This is the second consecutive year that Alabama State has started the season off 0-1-1, doing so in 2022 with a draw against Mercer and a loss against Winthrop (both home matches).
  • Head coach Jodie Smith is currently at 198 career wins, needing just two to reach the 200-win milestone.
  • The last time these two teams met in Montgomery (2021 spring), Alabama State went on to finish 9-3-1 on the year to win the conference. They earned the automatic bid from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to the NCAA Tournament.
UAB Notes
  • UAB hits the road for the first time this season after a pair of home matches. The Blazers fell to Georgia Southern in the opener (2-0) and then fell to No. 7 Alabama (1-0) on Sunday.
  • In the two losses, UAB has been out shot 28-7.
  • The Blazers were picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference East Division in their first season of competition in the conference. They had three players – Carlyn Presley, Jessica Wheeler, and Asha Zuniga named to the conference's Watch List.
Series History
  • Alabama State and UAB have met three times in school history with the Blazers holding a 2-0-1 advantage. The meeting on Thursday will be the second meeting in the city of Montgomery between the two and the first since 2021.
  • The two last met on September 10, 2021, and ended in a scoreless draw,
