CINCINNATI, Ohio | Alabama State fell to Indiana State 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 13-25, 19-25) in its second match of the Tribute to #10 tournament at Fifth Third Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Taila Gaines and
A'Nylah Cobb led Alabama State (0-2) with eight kills, while
Kaylen Hines added six.
Temperance Chatman recorded a match-high 22 digs to go along with four service aces, while
Jada Rhodes added five digs and three service aces. Gaines added five blocks in the loss and
Christyn Ashby four.
Madison Beasley led the Lady Hornets with 16 assists and
Emily Brooks chipped in with 12.
SET 1 | The two teams traded points until Indiana State jumped out to a 7-4 lead before a service error and a kill by Gaines trimmed the deficit to 7-6. The Lady Hornets stayed within a pair of points using kills by Gaines and Hines before Indiana State used a 6-0 run to open an 18-10 lead. Alabama State used a 4-0 run to jump back into the set (18-14) using a kill by Ashby and an ace by Rhodes. The Sycamores scored seven of the last 12 points to win the opening set.
SET 2 | The Lady Hornets grabbed an early lead before Indiana State tied the set at 5-all before going on a 3-0 run to open up an 8-5 lead. They used a service ace by Rhodes and a pair of Sycamore errors to jump to the lead. After Indiana State came back to tie the set at 9-all, Alabama State went on a 3-0 run again only to be answered by Indiana State took their first lead at 14-12. The Lady Hornets trailed 20-19 before scoring the final six points of the set for the win highlighted by kills from Hines and Gaines, and a pair of service aces from Chatman to secure the set victory.
SET 3 | Indiana State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and Alabama State couldn't recover, getting as close to 11-8. The Sycamores used a 9-0 run to open a 20-8 lead before a kill from Cobb trimmed the lead to 20-9. Alabama State went on a 3-0 run on a pair of Indiana State errors, before the Sycamores closed out the set.
SET 4 | Indiana State again opened the set on a run, this time a 6-0 run over the Lady Hornets before Alabama State scored back-to-back points and then a 3-0 run including a kill by Rhodes to trim the deficit to 7-5. After falling behind 12-8, the Lady Hornets scored four of the next five points using a kill by Ashby and an ace by Chatman to climb to within a point at 12-11. They tied the set at 14-all on a kill by
Jylen Whitten before Indiana State went on a 5-0 run to grab a 19-14 lead. Alabama State was able to close to within four at 23-19 before Indiana State scored the final two points of the set to close out the match.
