HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama State University volleyball earned a five set victory against in state rival Alabama A&M on Friday at Elmore Gymnasium.

The victory boosted the Lady Hornets' record to 7-13 overall and 4-3 in SWAC play.

The Lady Hornets were led by a double-double from Bailee Payne, who registered 10 kills and 12 digs on the day. Jyriah Morgan also added 18 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Breanna Swanson chipped in for with 22 digs to go with six blocks from Zanobia Willis.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 | The Lady Hornets lost set one 27-25 despite a solid showing on the attacking end. Alabama State put together a .353 attack percentage with 15 kills in the set loss.

SET 2 | Alabama State fired back from a first-set loss to take the second set 25-17, tying the match at one set apiece. The Lady Hornets earned the set victory thanks to a solid performance on the attacking end. Alabama State put together a .394 attack percentage with 19 kills in the set win. The Lady Hornets ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.

SET 3 | Alabama State won again in set three to make it a 2-1 match. The Lady Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-21 victory. Alabama State opened up as much as a 10 point lead at 12-2 before finishing off the set, totaling 16 kills along the way. Alabama State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Alabama A&M attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Alabama State couldn't keep the win streak alive, as the Bulldogs forced a fifth set with a 25-23 fourth-set win. The Lady Hornets battled back from a nine-point deficit at 11-2, but it wasn't enough as Alabama A&M hung on to win the set.

SET 5 | Alabama State took a two sets to one lead and held off Alabama A&M's comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-12 and the match 3-2. The Lady Hornets took the lead for good at 8-7 in a set that had just one lead change before the Lady Hornets took over the lead.
