Gilliam's Three Field Goals Leads 'Bama State Past Prairie View A&M 9-6

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University put together a 15-play, 53-yard drive, culminating in a 30-yard field goal from Brandon Gilliams with 6:43 left in the contest to help the Hornets claim a 9-6 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday at ASU Stadium.

The Hornets improved to 6-5 on the year and 5-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Panthers fell to 5-7 and 3-5.

Daquon Kincey led all Hornets rushers with 93 yards in the contest, picking up 4.4 yards per carry. Kareem Keye also added 44 yards on the ground, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.

Ajai Harrell pulled in two catches for 45 yards.

James Burgess recorded six tackles, one tackle for losss, one sack, one forced fumble, and one recovered fumble. Caleb Offord added 0.5 TFL and one interception and Demarkus Cunningham had eight tackles and one recovered fumble in the win.

The Hornets won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up twice, with Alabama State turning those takeaways into three points.

Defensively, Alabama State did an excellent job restricting the Prairie View A&M offensive attack, holding the Panthers to 197 total yards. The Hornets kept Prairie View A&M under 150 yards on both the ground and through the air, allowing 122 passing and 75 rushing yards. The Hornets defense took up residence in Prairie View A&M's backfield all game, racking up four sacks and seven total tackles for loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alabama State grabbed a 3-0 lead over Prairie View A&M after scoring the game's first points with 10:59 remaining in the first quarter.Prairie View A&M scored to go ahead 6-3 before the Hornets responded to tie the game at 6-6.

Alabama State followed with a 30-yard field goal from Gilliam at the 6:43 mark in the fourth quarter and took a 9-6 lead in the process. Neither team scored again in the game.
