MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Amarr Knox scored 23 points, Micah Simpson added 20, and the Alabama State men's basketball team knocked off the UT Martin Skyhawks 103-93 in an overtime thriller at home Wednesday.
Knox and Simpson's stellar scoring performances led the Hornets (4-6) in the contest. Knox tacked on three assists and two steals. CJ Hines also contributed with a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists.
The ASU offense made hay from deep, knocking down 17 threes on 36 attempts. Simpson hit six treys for the Hornets in the contest.
The Hornet defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 16 UT Martin turnovers while committing five. Those takeaways turned into 26 points on the other end of the floor. Knox's two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 18-16 advantage, ASU went on a 9-0 run with 10:29 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Simpson, to increase its lead to 27-16. The Hornets then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 48-30 advantage. ASU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 11 shots to account for 33 of its 48 points.
ASU kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished by Hines' three, to grow the lead to 55-35 with 15:58 to go in the contest. The Skyhawks then fought back to even things up at 88-88 and sent the game to overtime. ASU got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 40 total points.
ASU grabbed a 91-90 lead with 3:05 left in overtime before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Tyler Mack's layup, to grow its advantage to 96-90 with 2:36 to go in the period. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 103-93 win.
