AUBURN, Ala. | The labama State University women's basketball team fell 83-40 to Auburn University on Saturday at Neville Arena.
Cordasia Harris led the Hornets (2-9) with 10 points and six rebounds. Ashley Gray also tacked on two points and four steals from the bench and Taylor Smith chipped in as well with nine points.
Led by Harris' three offensive rebounds, Alabama State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in one second chance points.
The Alabama State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Auburn turnovers. Those takeaways turned into seven points on the other end of the floor. Gray's four steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
Alabama State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 54-19 halftime deficit.
Alabama State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 69-27 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Alabama State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's eight third-quarter points.
Auburn kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 80-30 advantage before Alabama State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Kaitlyn Bryant's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 80-38 with 1:29 to go in the contest. Auburn responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 83-40. Alabama State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 13 total points.
