Hornets head to Louisiana, battle for first place as three of the top four teams play each other

GRAMBLING, La. | The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) reaches its midway point this weekend, and three of the top four teams in the conference standings will play against each other with Alabama State hitting the road to face Grambling State and Southern.

Alabama State (11-11, 6-3 SWAC) faces Grambling State (10-12, 7-2 SWAC) on Saturday to kick off the weekend before hitting the road to Baton Rouge (La.) to face Southern (13-9, 7-2 SWAC) on Monday. The game times for Monday have changed to accommodate Mardi Gras, and the games will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.

TJ Madlock leads Alabama State in scoring at 15.5 points per game, placing him eighth in the conference in that category. He is also sixth in steals at 1.91 per game this season while Ubong Okon is sixth in rebounding at 6.33 and third in blocked shots at 1.14 per game. CJ Hines is the only other player in double figures for Alabama State through 22 games averaging 10.5 per game, including 19 points in the last nine minutes in a win over Florida A&M on Monday.

Alabama State Notes

  • Madlock became the first player in the Southwestern Athletic Conference to be named Player of the Week four times after earning the honor following the two games in Texas. The junior averaged 23.5 points per game in a pair of games against Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern, scoring a career-high 30 points in the win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. The junior finished the game shooting 58.8 (10-of-17) percent from the floor in 32 minutes of action. He also finished the night shooting 76.9 (10-of-13) percent from the free throw line while grabbing five rebounds, dishing out three assists, and recording four steals.
  • This weekend marks the second visit to Louisiana after Alabama fell to LSU back in December, and the Hornets are 109-80. They have faced Grambling State [59-30], Louisiana Tech [0-4], LSU [0-1], LSU New Orleans (0-1], McNeese State [0-2], Northwestern State [1-1], Southern [47-41], and Southern-New Orleans [2-0]. This week they will face a pair of teams from the state of Louisiana who are the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
  • Range hit his 1,000th career point against Jackson State [1/11/24] on a three-pointer with 9:45 to play in the game. He started his career with 281 points at Tarleton State, while Madlock hit his 1,000th career point in the second half against Alcorn State [1/13/24] after starting his career with 395 points at South Carolina State. The duo, along with Hines [transfer from Faulkner] have combined for 3,899 points during their careers. The duo joins 25 others who have scored 1,000 career points [while not all at Alabama State].
  • Micah Octave recorded at last one steal in all 18 games for the Hornets this season, including four against Jackson State [1/11] at home in the last contest. He had his streak snapped at Prairie View A&M [1/27/24], but has a steal in 21 of 22 games. The team is currently 18th in steals in the country.
  • The Hornets are currently ranked 14th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game [13.77] and are 33rd overall in rebounding  [39.68] so far through 22 games.
