MONTGOMERY, Ala. --Freshman Jafet Martinez and junior Kyler McIntosh combined to throw a three-hit shutout with 12 striekuts in Alabama State University's 7-0 win over Alabama A&M University 7-0 on Sunday.
The win gave the Hornets the series win 2-1 that saw ASU pitches combine for 41 strikeouts in three games.
Martinez (2-0) started and picked up the win for Alabama State (10-11, ), going seven shutout innings while giving up two hits, walking none, and striking out nine. McIntosh was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going two shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Alabama State got an RBI single from senior Jack Hay, scoring senior Randy Flores from third base.
The Hornets then tacked on runs in the fourth and seventh innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored four times. A grand slam from sophomore Devin Chandler off junior Evan Hurlburt cashed in all of those four runs in the frame.
