MONTGOMERY, Ala. --Their power numbers at the plate were not lacking, but Alabama State University's three long balls on the day were not enough to bring the Hornets a victory against the Troy University on Tuesday.
Sophomore Devin Brooks (1-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Alabama State (13-13). Freshman Juan Berrios was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking none, and striking out three.
At the plate, the Hornets were paced by senior Cristian Lopez, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Senior Randy Flores compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Devin Chandler also helped out for Alabama State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Alabama State scored two runs on solo shots from Flores and Lopez.
The Trojans expanded their lead to 14-2 before the Hornets offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Alabama State picked up a run on Chandler's leadoff home run off of senior Michael Osmond, which brought the score to 14-3 in favor of the Trojans. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
