PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Alabama State quarterback
Andrew Body and running back
Marcus Harris II combined for four rushing touchdowns as the Hornets erased an early deficit to defeat Prairie View A&M 31–28 on Saturday afternoon at Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field.
The win lifted Alabama State to
6–2 overall and 4–1 in SWAC play, while Prairie View dropped to 6–3 and 4–1.
Prairie View jumped out to a quick 14–0 lead behind scores from
Chase Bingmon and
Rodny Ojo in the opening quarter. Alabama State responded with a 7-play, 75-yard drive capped by Body's 7-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14–7 late in the first.
After the Panthers extended their lead to 21–7 early in the second quarter, Alabama State's special teams provided a spark when
Nehemiah Hixon returned a kickoff 78 yards to set up a short field. Harris II punched it in from 10 yards out, and Body followed with his second rushing touchdown — a four-yard keeper — to even the score at 21–21 heading into halftime.
The Hornets grabbed their first lead of the day early in the third quarter when
Andrew Abu-Akel drilled a 37-yard field goal. Moments later, Harris II's second touchdown — a 2-yard run following a
Detrick Jones interception — stretched the lead to 31–21.
Prairie View narrowed the margin to 31–28 on a 29-yard touchdown pass from
Cameron Peters to Ojo midway through the fourth quarter, but Alabama State's defense held firm down the stretch, forcing a missed 53-yard field goal in the final seconds to seal the victory.
Alabama State's ground attack proved decisive, amassing
213 rushing yards on 41 carries.
Jamarie Hostzclaw led all rushers with
127 yards on 21 carries, while Body added
29 yards and two touchdowns, and Harris II scored twice with
20 yards on five carries.
Defensively,
Denzel Johnson led the Hornets with
11 tackles and an interception, while
Jalil Lenore added 10 stops. Alabama State intercepted Peters four times — with picks from Johnson, Jones, and
Deontre Morris — to stall multiple Prairie View drives.
The Hornets will return home next weekend for a key conference match up against Texa Southern University at 2 p.m. inside ASU Stadium.
