VERO BEACH, Fla. | Kyler McIntosh and Kameron Douglas each racked up three hits to help propel the Alabama State University past the Jackson State Tigers 11-3 on Sunday at the Andre Dawson Classic..
Junior Jaxon Christensen (1-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Alabama State (4-4). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out four. Senior Javon Christian also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
In addition to his three hits, Douglas had a double and an RBI to lead the Hornets, along with McIntosh's three base knocks. Sophomore Juan Cruz also helped out for Alabama State, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Alabama State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of junior Kelvin Agosto.
The Tigers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-3 until the Hornets expanded their advantage in the sixth. Alabama State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by junior Wilbert Espinal's single, which brought the Hornets lead to 6-3.
Alabama State held Jackson State scoreless before building their lead to 8-3 the following inning. The Hornets drove two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Cruz that scored freshman Fabian Santana and sophomore Isaiah Landry.
Alabama State held the Tigers without a run before their offense got things moving the next inning. bringing the Alabama State advantage to 11-3. The score remained 11-3 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
