BATON ROUGE, La. -- TJ Madlock converted a pair of free throws with one second remaining to lift Alabama State past Southern 66-65 and secure the season sweep.
The Hornets (15-15, 11-6) had two players score in double figures, led by TJ Madlock, who had 24 points and nine rebounds. Micah Octave added 11 points and six rebounds and Amarr Knox added nine points, seven assists, and three steals.
The Alabama State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, knocking down 10 threes on 22 attempts. Octave was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining three treys in the contest.
Alabama State's defense held Southern to only 15 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 22-17, Alabama State went on a 12-0 run with 7:58 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Tyler Mack, to take a 29-22 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 35-32 advantage. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 35 points.
Alabama State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 62-51 with 5:03 to go in the contest. The Jaguars narrowed the margin somewhat before the game ended, but the Hornets still held on for the 66-65 win. Alabama State made the most of five offensive rebounds to tack on 15 second-chance points out of 31 total in the period.
