BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State University secured a key victory in the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Championship, defeating Jackson State 5-3 in an elimination game on Friday morning at historic Rickwood Field.
The Hornets capitalized on timely hitting and solid pitching to hold off the Tigers. Right fielder
Kameron Douglas sparked the offense with a solo home run in the third inning, giving Alabama State a 2-0 lead. Later in the game,
Juan Cruz delivered a clutch two-run single in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and give the Hornets a 5-3 lead.
On the mound, reliever
Trey Power (4-3) was lights out, throwing four scoreless innings in relief of starter Esaid Pena, who allowed three runs—two earned—over five innings. Power limited Jackson State to just one hit while striking out none and walking none, earning the win.
Offensively, Alabama State was led by
Devin Chandler, who contributed a key triple, and
Fabian Santana, who added an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Isaiah Landry scored two runs, showcasing his speed and savvy on the base paths.
Defensively, both teams were efficient, each committing one error. The Hornets turned in a disciplined performance, stranding only four runners and executing crucial plays to preserve their lead.
With the win, Alabama State improves to 31-28 on the season.
