GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Alabama State University volleyball team came up short against Winthrop on Friday evening, falling in four sets (23-25, 16-25, 25-20, 20-25) at Alley Gymnasium.
The Hornets battled to the wire in the opening set, trading points late before Winthrop closed on a pair of kills to edge out a 25-23 win. Alabama State regrouped in the third, using strong swings from Taylor Williams and Kaylen Hines to secure a 25-20 victory and extend the match.
The fourth game was much like the first three as the Hornets fell in 27-25 in another close outing.
Jyriah Morgan once again paced the Hornets offense finishing with 13 kills, while Williams finished with nine kills and added eight digs for a double-double, while Hines and Essence Jones each chipped in 12 kills with three blocks. Setter Sierra Scanlan picked up a double-double by pacing the Hornets with 23 assists and 10 digs.
The Hornets will end play in the Furman Invitational against North Florida, Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.
