Hornets Sweep Grambling to Open SWAC Schedule

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University women's volleyball opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play in dominant fashion Friday night, sweeping Grambling State 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19) inside Lockhart Gymnasium.

The win marked the 250th win for head coach Penny White at Bama State and moved her within eight wins of her 500th career win. 

The Hornets (2-11, 1-0 SWAC) controlled the match from the start, hitting .365 as a team while holding Grambling (1-10, 0-1 SWAC) to just .075. Alabama State also finished with a 6-3 advantage in total team blocks and served up nine aces.

Jyriah Morgan and Kaylen Hines led the Hornets' balanced attack, combining for 17 kills on the night. Morgan tallied 14 kills on a .700 hitting percentage, while Hines added eight kills and three blocks. Zanobia Willis chipped in eight kills of her own, hitting .500, while Essence Jones registered 11 kills with a .273 clip.

Setter Kamrynn Clay directed the offense with 35 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double. Defensively, Sierra Scanlan anchored the back row with 14 digs, while Brooke Adams contributed a team-high seven service aces to keep Grambling on its heels.

Alabama State jumped out to a 25-17 win in the opening set behind an early serving run from Adams. The Hornets dominated the second set, hitting .556 as a team to take a 25-14 win, before closing out the sweep with a steady 25-19 victory.

The Hornets will look to carry the momentum into their next when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at 3 p.m.
