ATHENS, Ga. – The Alabama State University volleyball team opened play at the 2025 Classic City Clash hosted by the University of Georgia, facing the host Bulldogs and the Blue Devils from Duke on the opening day of action.
ASU fell to Georgia (3-0) in action on Thursday morning. Reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week Jyriah Morgan along with Kaylen Hines, led the Hornets with each finishing the opening match with six kills with Brynn Metoyer adding five.
Sierra Scanlon led the Hornets with 11 assists while Kamrynn Clay added 10.
In ASU's second match of the day, the Hornets put together a strong showing against Duke, but ultimately fell 3-1.
Led by Morgan, who finished the match with 13 kills, the Hornets took the opening set of the match 25-23, before the Blue Devils rebounded with three consecutive close scoring matches (26-24, 25-21, 25-20) to finish out the match.
Morgan collected her kill total by hitting .407 while also adding three blocks at the net. Zanobia Willis finished with 10 kills while hitting at a .421 clip.
Hines finished the second match of the day with six kills and a match-high seven total block assists. Scanlon had 20 assists in the match, and Clay came up just short on a double-double finishing with 15 assists and nine digs.
The Hornets will end play at the Classic on Friday, Sept. 5, when they face Texas Tech at 11 a.m. (CT).
