GRAMBLING, La. | The Alabama State University men's basketball team out-rebounded the Grambling Tigers 45-40 but fell 57-47 on the road Saturday.
Micah Simpson led the Hornets (7-16, 4-6) with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Asjon Anderson added seven points and three steals, and Tyler Byrd chipped in six points.
Alabama State grabbed 45 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Grambling's 40, led by Simpson's six. The Hornets also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 18 rebounds into 10 second-chance points.
The Alabama State defense held Grambling shooters to just 35.4 percent from the field. The Tigers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only six offensive rebounds and scored six second-chance points while Alabama State pulled down 27 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-8, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 6:55 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Anderson, to take a 14-9 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 21-18 advantage. Alabama State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 21 points close to the basket.
Alabama State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 26 points.
