Hornets' Baseball Falls To FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Alabama State University baseball fell 9-1 to Florida A&M in the second game of a three-game SWAC series on Saturday afternoon.

Florida A&M set the tone early, plating three runs in the first inning behind a two-run double from Justen Crews and an RBI single by Jay Campbell. The Rattlers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 5-0 before breaking the game open with a four-run eighth inning.

Alabama State (12-13, 3-5 SWAC) was limited offensively, collecting five hits on the afternoon. The Hornets broke through in the eighth inning when Niguel Jenkins doubled to left field and later scored on an RBI groundout by Fabian Santana to trim the deficit to 5-1.

Cale Clark accounted for Alabama State's other run, scoring in the eighth after reaching on a single. Jenkins, Santana, Breydon Divine, and Alex Espaillat each recorded one hit for the Hornets.

Florida A&M (11-14, 6-2 SWAC) finished with 13 hits, led by Jay Campbell's 4-for-5 performance with three RBI. Caden Kresak added three RBI, while Justen Crews drove in two runs.

On the mound, Esaid Peña (2-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in the opening inning. Joe Dolinshek provided three innings of relief, surrendering two runs, while James Peterson turned in a solid outing with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Jacob Loeffler allowed four runs in the eighth.

Garrett Workman earned the win for Florida A&M, tossing 7.2 innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday.
