HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama State closed out a dominant weekend with a 15-6 victory over Alabama A&M on Sunday at Bulldog Field, securing a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) sweep.
The Hornets (18-16, 8-7 SWAC) pounded out 18 hits and scored in six different innings, building an early lead and never relinquishing control.
Alabama State wasted no time setting the tone, plating four runs in the opening inning. Miguel Oropeza delivered a two-run double down the left field line, while Trey Callaway followed with an RBI single. Jackson Williams added a sacrifice fly to cap the early surge.
After Alabama A&M answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first, the Hornets responded immediately. Oropeza launched a solo home run in the second inning, and Devin Chandler broke the game open in the third with a three-run homer to push the lead to 8-2.
The offensive pressure continued into the middle innings. Callaway added another RBI single in the fourth before Alabama State erupted for four runs in the fifth. Niguel Jenkins highlighted the inning with a two-run double, and Williams followed with an RBI double to extend the advantage to 13-2.
Alabama State added two more runs in the seventh inning, capitalizing on a pair of hits and a defensive miscue to stretch the lead to 15-2.
Alabama A&M (8-30, 2-13 SWAC) mounted its only significant rally in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on five hits, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
Oropeza led the Hornets offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs, including a home run and a double. Chandler added two hits and three RBIs, while Jenkins contributed two hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Williams also drove in three runs as part of a balanced offensive attack that saw six players record multiple hits.
On the mound, James Peterson (3-0) earned the win in relief, delivering 5.1 shutout innings while allowing no hits and striking out five to stabilize the game after a brief early push by the Bulldogs.
Trey Power got the start, while Zane Baltz, Caio Araujo, and Joe Dolinshek combined to finish the contest.
