MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Monique Holland has been hired at Alabama State University as the Deputy Athletic Director for External (Community and Strategic Initiatives), Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Jason Cable announced on Monday.
Holland returns to ASU more than a decade after making history as the University's first female Athletics Director, bringing with her a distinguished record of leadership shaped by broad experience across collegiate athletics. Her career began at Georgia Tech, where she served as an assistant women's basketball coach before moving into an athletics Compliance administrative role. She went on to build more than a decade of experience in governance, rules education, and student-athlete advocacy through roles at Clayton State University, the NCAA National Office, and Georgia State University—preparing her to return to her alma mater in 2008 as a senior compliance administrator, before being promoted to Athletics Director in 2009.
Following her tenure as AD, Holland expanded her executive portfolio through impactful leadership roles at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Auburn University.
At SMU, she served as Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Senior Woman Administrator, overseeing business operations—including finance, human resources, risk management, and purchasing—and managing student-athlete wellness programs such as sports medicine, nutrition, and sports psychology. She provided sport oversight for men's and women's basketball and cross country/track and field, developed staff-development frameworks, and represented SMU on numerous American Athletic Conference committees. This included serving as Chair of the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Group, further elevating her influence within the conference. Holland also chaired the Head Women's Basketball Coach Search Committee, served on the Head Football Coach Search Committee, functioned as the University's Deputy Title IX Coordinator, and contributed to multiple presidential task forces and campus committees.
At Auburn University, Holland served as the Executive Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Experience and Senior Woman Administrator, leading the holistic development of student-athletes across academics, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, nutrition, counseling, sports psychology, and life-skills enhancement. She chaired the Sport Administration Program, providing strategic oversight and regular briefings to the Director of Athletics on the administration of Auburn's 21 sport programs. Holland also provided sport oversight for women's basketball, softball, swimming and diving, and gymnastics while leading major diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; chairing the Sexual Violence Prevention Collaboration Team; chairing the Head Women's Basketball Coach Search Committee; co-chairing the Athletics Advisory Task Force on Inclusion and Race Relations; and serving on the University's Chief Diversity Officer Cabinet.
Most recently, Holland served as Chief of Staff at Northwestern University, acting as a strategic advisor to the Director of Athletics and a key leader in organizational decision-making. She mediated complex personnel matters, identified emerging departmental issues, and strengthened strategic alliances with campus and community partners. Holland also served as Chair of Northwestern's Athletics Strategic Plan, leading the department's first completed plan in more than 15 years.
A native of St. Joseph, Missouri, Holland has earned recognition throughout her career for her leadership, service, and commitment to advancing college athletics. She has participated in several prestigious professional development institutes, served on numerous conference and NCAA committees, and was honored as one of ASU's 50 Under 50, celebrating alumni who exemplify excellence and impact in their fields.
A standout women's basketball student-athlete from 1992–1995, Holland was an Academic All-American, team captain, and one of the program's most dynamic and impactful defensive guards. She also served as Vice-Chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and, was the inaugural recipient of ASU Athletics' Arthur Barnet Perseverance Award, recognizing her resilience and commitment to excellence. Her dedication to ASU has remained unwavering; she serves as co-chair of the Basketball Alumni Weekend Committee and has spent the past four years on the ASU Hall of Fame Committee while continuing to support initiatives that strengthen alumni engagement and institutional pride. She also provided the largest gift on record to the women's basketball team, demonstrating her belief in giving back to the program that shaped her.
In her new role, Holland will lead alumni relations, donor engagement, and key strategic initiatives; strengthen operating and NIL resources for all sport programs; oversee the sport administration program; and serve as the liaison to the Hornet Club and premium seating to enhance the donor and fan experience.
Holland is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She graduated from Alabama State University with a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation and later earned a master's degree in sport administration from Georgia State University. Her appointment reflects ASU's continued commitment to elevating its athletics programs, deepening alumni engagement, and advancing the student-athlete experience through visionary leadership.
