AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Alabama State University men's golf team took the course at Forest Hills Golf Club at the three-day Augusta University Fall Jaguar Invitational, finishing ninth in the three-round season opener, which concluded Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets sat in the ninth spot across all three rounds, carding a +23 opening round and a +25 in the second round before finishing with a 20-over-92 team score in Tuesday's competition on the par 72, 7,086-yard course.
The first round featured a strong showing from
Charongrat Jitnavasathien, who carded a 1-over-73 after posting five birdies and turning in an even performance around the bend.
Wesley Bairros and
Osiregbeme Egbakhumeh each had +6 opening rounds, with the former collecting back-to-back birdies on the par-5 11th and par-4 12th on his way to a 1-over on the back end.
Bairros continued his strong outing in the second round, improving his positioning with a 1-over-73. His 11 pars and three birdies helped the Brazil native card a 1-under-35 on the back nine. Second-year Hornet
Telmo Sueiro had similar success around the turn, tallying pars on seven of the final eight holes to finish even on the last nine and 6-over-78 on the day.
The final round featured strong rounds from Bairros and
Narabodin Swaengdee. Bairros had a birdie on each of the front and back nine while combining to record par on 12 of the remaining 16 holes to finish 3-over on the round and +10 on the outing, tied for a team-best 45th place. Swaengdee, who entered the day 21-over par, had a stellar back nine performance, collecting birdies on the 11th, 17th and 18th holes while scoring par on five of the remaining six to go 2-under and finish the final round at 2-over-74 to improve to a 63rd-place finish.
Jitnavasathien joined Swaengdee with a +19 tally on the weekend, while Egbakhumeh topped the duo by one stroke with an 18-over-234 weekend after a 5-over finish on the final go-around.
Host school Augusta recorded a 21-under par to win the tournament, with High Point (-15) and Belmont (-3) posting under par scores to finish in the top three. Among other schools, Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Alabama A&M finished eighth with an 18-over-234. The Jaguars claimed three of the top four individual finishers, including Chapman Barnett and Pieter Rossouw, who finished tied atop the leaderboard with identical 9-under-207 performances.
The Hornets will return to Georgia for its next outing, with the Tomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Collegiate Golf Classic set to take place on Monday, Sept. 21 and Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Bear's Best Atlanta in Suwanee.
